This is an outstanding and exceptionally costly armour, so the sitter will have been a man of rank and wealth. It is certain that the armour is Italian, most likely Milanese. Judging from the fashion of its breastplates and gauntlets the armour can be dated to about 1570-80.

The overall impression that the armour gives is similar to the products attributed to Lucio Marliano called (Piccinino) or his circle.
