In a letter probably on the 10th September 1788 Hannah More (1745 – 1833) wrote to thank her friend Lady Middleton, for the offer of either a portrait of either "the Archbishop or of the Moralist", but encouraging her to portray a living sitter. Sir Charles Elizabeth Bouverie or Lady Middleton herself. It is possible that this Self Portrait was the outcome of Hannah Mores encouragement .
This landscape shows a view of Edinburgh City centre and Castle beyond , looking down Princes St to St Mary’s Cathedral. The Dugald Stewart Monument in the foreground is modelled on Tower of the Winds in Athens, Greece by Lysicrates. One of the key structures on Calton Hill that help earn Edinburgh the sobriquet ‘Athens of the North’. The monument is a memorial to the Scottish philosopher Dugald Stewart (1753–1828). It is situated on Calton Hill overlooking Edinburgh city centre and was completed in 1831.
The Summer Drawing Room is one of the rooms in the private quarters of Hatfield House. The portrait attributed to Daniel Mytens depicted is of Lady Anne Cecil and this still hangs in that room. The object on the far left of the painting is in fact a Dutch manual organ, circa 1611. It now sits in the Armoury in Hatfield House.
